Smart Crossings
By Finn Cawley
Hello
My name is Finn Cawley. I am 9 years old. My mommy works in Leeds and I want her to be safe doing her job.
I like smart gadgets. I think smart crossings would be really cool. The crossing will light up red on the floor of the crossing from one side of the road to the other if you cannot cross and green if you can and orange if its moving between the colours, like a traffic light.
The crossing will talk to warn pedestrians to stop and wait and when it is safe to walk. This will help those who are blind, and the visual colour across the road will help those who are deaf and people with learning disabilities as we are taught early that Red is a warning colour.
Cars will still see a traffic light but the colour of the crossing floor will be able to be seen further away as it's a bigger surface area so traffic will have a longer warning period especially when it's dark that they need to stop.
I also want the crossing to be road solar panels. This will then cost no money to have the lights and sound. I saw a whole road made of solar panel on YouTube that can take weight of a big truck. This will help the environment.
It would be cool if the smart crossing can talk and tells people to cross safely and have a good day and for the system to recognise a person who is slower and has mobility issues and is still on the crossing to stay red until the person has safely cleared the crossing. At the minute, crossings just count to 30 seconds and change even if someone is on it.
This way its a crossing for all ages, all impairments all disabilities. It would also be good if the crossing has a defibrillator attached and a button to contact emergency people to say theres an emergency.
If the road gets closed the crossing can change to crosses to say road ahead closed.
Another button could tell the pedestrian where they are located and a digital map of where to access police stations as mommy said Leeds gets visitors from other countries a lot.
This is my idea. Thank you for reading.
If I win can you please donate the £2000 to buy defibrillators for outside.
