Healing the Eastside
By Jason Lowe
Healing Leeds' Eastside will help bridge the socio-economic divide between the inner city and city centre. This entry exploits a number of opportunities to do this, building on many of the assets the area already has. The plan hinges on the complete closure of the north-south axis formed by St. Peter's Street and Crown Point Road, made possible by the parallel Marsh Lane.
A number of local access routes are maintained, notably to and from the City Bus Station, however a linear park is created along the valley formed from the Lady Beck. The park would be an attraction but also act as flood alleviation if needed. The plan is bisected by an extended Kirkgate formed from reclaimed land, creating a seamless new streetscape to Saxton.
